Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Urgent Care Support

What counts as urgent care for pets?+

Urgent care is for health concerns that should be addressed sooner than a routine wellness visit, but may not require a 24-hour emergency hospital.

Examples may include vomiting or diarrhea, limping, coughing or sneezing, itchy skin or hot spots, accidental ingestion, low or no appetite, wound concerns, lethargy, urinary issues, sudden behaviour changes, or signs of pain. If you are unsure how serious something is, call the clinic and our team can help guide the next step.

Do you offer same-day urgent care appointments?+

When availability allows, we do our best to offer same-day appointments for pets who should be seen sooner.

Urgent appointment availability can vary depending on the day, doctor schedule, and the type of concern. Calling the clinic is the best first step because our team can help determine whether your pet should be seen at Upper Village, booked for the next available appointment, connected with telehealth support, or directed to an emergency veterinary hospital.

Is Upper Village Veterinary Hospital a 24-hour emergency hospital?+

No. We are not a 24-hour emergency hospital, but we can support urgent concerns during clinic hours and offer after-hours telehealth guidance.

During clinic hours, our team will always try to help when a pet has an urgent concern. After hours, you can call our main number and press 5 to speak with a Registered Veterinary Technician. If your pet needs immediate in-person emergency care, the technician or our team may direct you to an emergency veterinary centre.

What should I do if my pet is sick or injured after hours?+

Call our main number at (647) 560-9276 and press 5 for after-hours telehealth support.

The Registered Veterinary Technician can help you understand whether your pet may be monitored at home, should book with us, or should go to an emergency veterinary hospital. If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, is bleeding heavily, may have eaten something toxic, has had a seizure, or seems severely painful or distressed, seek emergency care right away.

Can you diagnose and treat urgent concerns at the hospital?+

Yes. Upper Village is a full-service hospital with diagnostic and treatment capabilities for many urgent medical concerns.

Depending on your pet's symptoms, an urgent visit may include a physical exam, bloodwork, urine testing, diagnostic imaging, medication, wound care, pain control, monitoring, or a treatment plan. If your pet needs care beyond what can be provided safely in clinic, we will explain the situation and recommend the appropriate emergency or referral option.

How do I book an urgent care appointment?+

For urgent concerns, calling the clinic is usually the best first step so our team can help you choose the safest appointment type.

You can also request an appointment online, but if your pet is sick, injured, or changing quickly, call us directly at (647) 560-9276. This helps us understand what is happening and guide you more quickly.

What should I bring to an urgent care visit?+

Bring any medications, recent records, photos or videos of symptoms, and details about when the concern started.

Helpful information includes when symptoms began, what your pet has eaten, whether they may have accessed anything unusual, changes in appetite or bathroom habits, current medications, and any previous medical records if your pet is new to us. These details help the veterinary team understand the full picture faster.
