How microchips support many joyous reunions
We are thrilled to welcome you and your pet to the Upper Village Veterinary Hospital amily! It is a great privilege and responsibility to work with our clients across Toronto, Ontario, on steps and precautions to keep pets safe and secure. Notably, we provide safe, affordable, and reliable microchip services.
What is a microchip?
Microchip refers to a preventative service that helps to reunite lost pets with their families. This service, known as “microchipping,” can be completed as a quick, painless, and affordable procedure at our clinic.
How effective is microchipping?
Very! Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be reunited with their owners as non-chipped dogs. The differences for cats are even more stark; chipped felines are more than 20 times as likely to be returned to their parents compared to their counterparts who do not have the chip. Collars can fall off. Tags may break or become damaged. But microchips are a predictable, largely no-fail option.
How do you “chip”?
Our veterinarian, Dr. Steven Davidson, introduces the truly tiny or “micro” chip underneath your dog’s or cat’s skin. Dr. Davidson typically applies the chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. Because the chip is so tiny and about the size of a grain of rice, no numbing or sedation is needed for your pet’s comfort. We can complete the whole process in just minutes.
How does the chip work exactly?
Each microchip is associated with a different number, so your pet is assigned a unique “identifier.” Should your pet become lost and then be found, it can be taken to the nearest rescue, humane society, veterinary clinic, or similarly equipped organization with a microchip reader. This machine is used to scan the microchip. After the chip is scanned, contact information related to your pet is securely transmitted. Clients have peace of mind that their private information is in good hands.
What information is transmitted?
Only the most basic contact details should be on file with a microchip registry. This includes contact details such as the primary phone number to be called if your pet is found. For this reason, it is essential to register your pet’s chip as soon as the procedure is done at Upper Village Veterinary Hospital. It is important to update the registry with any changes to your contact information, including a new phone number. The capacity to reunite pets with their families is only as good as the information on file. During your pet’s routine wellness visits, our team will also check that microchips remain in good working order, as there is a rare chance of the chip migrating from its original implantation site.
